Q: How long have you been buying for RaeLynn’s?
A: I have been buying for RaeLynn’s since 2011, so about 4 years now.
Q: Which do you prefer, buying boutique or prom?
A: This is a difficult question because they are honestly so different. Boutique buying is fun because it is clothing that I can wear so of course I love that. But prom buying is an experience because we sit in fashion shows and meet with top designers, which is so rewarding.
Q: How would you compare your first buying trip to your most recent?
A: My first buying trip I was completely overwhelmed. I couldn’t believe how much money we were spending and all I kept thinking was “If this doesn’t sell, I am going to cry.” You have to learn how to buy and not think about just what you like, but what caters to so many different styles. So my most recent trip, I am feeling much more confident in what I am doing and bringing to Indy.
Q: When selecting items, how do you go about the process of what to buy, and what not to buy?
A: You really have to know who your target audience is and what their lifestyle is. For prom, it’s completely different than boutique. When we buy for prom, we buy pretty much anything and everything because it’s such a specialty product and you have to have so many different styles. For boutique, I focus on what sells well and what people are interested in. For RaeLynn’s it’s typically summer dresses or vibrant staple pieces.
Q: Describe what the showrooms look like.
A: For prom, it’s elaborate. Runways, unique lighting, carpet, nice chairs, food all the time. It’s a very “celebrity” type setting. For boutique, it’s more like walking into a huge warehouse and searching for what you like.
Q: LA or NYC, pick one and why?
A: I would pick NYC 100 times over. LA is great but the public transportation isn’t as stable and NYC is truly the heart of fashion. NYC holds a special place in my heart since I lived there for a couple months last summer interning with one of my favorite designers, Faviana. There is a certain energy in NYC that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
Q: What is your go-to outfit for a buying trip?
A: That depends. For prom, we are dressed up a little more than we typically are for boutique. Think skirts, blazers, heels, chiffon tops. Boutique buying I usually find my favorite maxi dress or skirt and bring that.
Q: Describe a day in the life of a buyer (a typical day during your trip)?
A: We wake up typically around 7 or so and are out the door by 8:30. For boutique buying, our day ends around 5 when the vendors close out in LA. Prom is a whole different story, we typically work until 8 or so at night and then enjoy dinner with designers and friends in the industry.
For prom, we sit in fashion shows most of the day. We touch and feel dresses, have models try them on and write up our orders. We look for the hottest trends and your timeless classics.
For boutique, we walk into vendor stores and pick out what we want and then they package it up!
Q: What is the best part of being a Raelynn’s buyer?
A: The best part about being a buyer is that I get to use my head and knowledge for fashion. So much strategy goes into what to buy and what we need and what people like. Plus I am able to see these incredible creations that came from an idea in someone’s head. I have seen some sketches and then the final product; it’s just an amazing process. I love seeing what we have bought come in to the store, and then girls try on our dresses and fall in love. It’s so rewarding.
